2023

Mary Molloy

Mary Molloy has served in a multitude of capacities during her distinguished tenure (1995-2000, 2010-present) at Governor’s School East (GSE), including as an instructor in Area I, Area II, and Area III. She’s currently serving in an administrative capacity as Area I Coordinator, while also still working as an English Instructor and an Area III Instructor.

Mary’s colleagues describe her as a dedicated leader who is passionate about teaching and cares deeply about student success, as well as supporting the Area I faculty team. She’s widely regarded throughout the GSE community as a crucial faculty leader and a vital asset to the GSE community.

GSE students described Mary as “amazing”, and someone who “constantly encouraged us to embrace new ideas and make ourselves vulnerable.” Another student shared, “[Mary] created a classroom that overflowed with creativity and energy…Having class with Mary was always something to look forward to; each class gave us a new experience.” One of Mary’s English students remarked that, “I grew as a person because I was pushed out of my comfort zone. It was obvious that she cared deeply about us and was passionate about us engaging in discussions with one another.”

Beyond her contributions at GSE, Mary holds a National Board Certification in Adolescent Young Adult/English Language Arts. In education for twenty-nine years, she taught high school English for fourteen years and is now enjoying a wonderful career as a high school Media Coordinator. She has also served as a Technology Facilitator and Magnet Facilitator for an arts magnet school.

For those and many other reasons, the NC Governor’s School Foundation is proud to honor Mary Molloy as a Jim Hart Governor’s School Champion Award winner for 2023.
