David Connell began his 20-year career at Governor’s School West (GSW) as the Choral Music accompanist. He subsequently was a Choral Music instructor and Lead Teacher, shaping how generations of NC Governor's School (GS) students share their talents with the world, while also helping mentor other instructors.

David’s profound impact extends beyond GSW’s classrooms and auditoriums. He has been a constant advocate for GS, sharing its impact with others and helping increase appreciation of the value GS brings to the State of NC and its students. In his role as a mentor to many GS instructors and staff, David is known for giving wonderful advice and serving as a trusted friend and counselor to many people throughout the GSW community, including many TACs and instructors who have gone on to become accomplished musicians and music educators. 

David has always been an unendingly kind and thoughtful presence in the GSW community. Every summer, he is instrumental in building camaraderie amongst faculty and staff, serving as a constant champion, chef, and morale booster. One of his favorite ways to help build community is cooking in the evenings, especially at stressful times for the GSW staff. David leads by bringing people together and strengthening the GSW community. GSW is a better, stronger, and more connected place because David chose to be a part of it.  

For those and many other reasons, the NC Governor’s School Foundation is proud to honor David Connell as a Jim Hart Governor’s School Champion Award winner for 2024.
